Recent Bathroom Remodel - from a dated eighties bathroom to a custom southwest bathroom decor
This remodel started with a very large and very dated bathroom. The tile was going on three decades old and the colors were atrocious. The large bathtub which is a soaking tub was in excellent condition and is white so it was kept but moved toward the window wall about a foot so the shower enclosure could be turned into a double shower. All the tile was torn off the counters, shower and tub surround - and boy if that does not make a mess. The woodwork was removed form the half round window above the bathtub, and from above the vanity mirror. The walls were wallpapered from floor to ceiling and it all had to be steamed off. The original large vanity mirror and the large dressing mirror on a side wall were in excellent condition and were left in place.
All the doors and door jambs were refinished to match the lighter of two wood colors in a bedroom set. Two new cabinets - a his and hers - were built and installed at the ends of the counters. The hers cabinet was prepared to hold blow dryer, flat iron and a lighted make up mirror was installed inside. All the vanity cabinets were finished in the darker color which was in the bedroom set. The light valance which had been wood faced was wrapped in sheet rock and it and the walls were treated with latte colored venetian plaster. Travertine was installed on the floors, counters, tub surround and in the shower. The travertine used for the floor is a Versailles pattern with a 4 x 4 tumbled square for the floor molding. The foot high surround around the tub and the front of the raised tub area was finished with split face travertine. The inside of the shower was done in a 1 x 2 travertine tile to resemble the split face around the tub. The old shower door was replaced with a frameless glass shower door. The counters were done in 24" tile so there are very few grout lines on the counter. The back splash and around the mirror was done in the 4 x 4 tumbled travertine. Under counter mount white oval sinks were installed in the vanity and all the fixtures were replaced with brushed nickel fixtures. The shower was converted from a one head shower to a two head shower with the second shower head being the adjustable hand held type. The old shower had glass on two sides and the new shower just has the glass door. A towel warmer was hard wired into the wall just to the left of the shower. The half round window into the water closet was wrapped in sheet rock and finished with venetian plaster where the wood had been removed. Blinds which open both top to bottom and bottom to top were installed along the windows above the split face travertine. The rolled towel rack was purchased to place to the right of the half round window. Click here to see item 4 on the How To Decorate page to learn about how this specific towel rack was chosen. It is so fun to find something you have searched for and have it turn out so well.
To add some metal wall art to our bathroom decor we purchased and installed the turquoise primitive sun hand towel holders on the sides of the his/hers cabinets. A coordinating light fixture was added above the dressing mirror. We also added a gorgeous bright blue pueblo scene wall hanging above the vanity area and used several taos blue pieces of pottery purchased at thrift and department stores. We buy anything we love no matter where we find it.
