There are so many closet organization systems around today but ours is very simple and easy to do in just a few steps which you can do at your leisure.

1.  Our very first closet organization tip is to hang all your clothes the same way on the hangers so the front of each item faces the same direction in the closet.  Rather than go through your whole closet now and do this, just do the items which do not go in the laundry and maybe some of the off season items if they are still hanging.  The rest you can do a little at a time as you do laundry and then as you dress each day you can do a couple items.  We want to make this doable, not overwhelming.  Another thing we like to do that is not really organizing but which makes your closet look just somehow peaceful is to use all the same color hangers.  We prefer black hangers and use them where we can - pants and skirts are sometimes on metal or clear hangers, but it still looks great.

2.  Next, organize your hang up items in groups.  Some people prefer to group their clothes by colors, we prefer to sort them by type; long sleeved blouses together, short sleeve blouses together, vests together, slacks together, skirts together and so on.  This works for men and women.  Then if you want, sort them by color within the type.  Again, if you don't want to do it all in the beginning, just decide which areas will hold which types and do it a little each day as you dress or do laundry.  When it gets all messed up - as it will - it is easy to organize it again because certain areas hold certain types of items.  If you just have a straight closet, then group from left to right.  If you have a large walk in closet then designate a section for each clothing type.  This not only helps your closets look organized, it helps you know what you have and aids you in dressing for the day.  Article continues below ads...

3.  Some items, like jeans, can either be hung up or placed in a drawer.  Make your decision what you will do with them based on where you have the most room - if you are long on closet space, hang them up.  If you have more drawer space and are short on closet space, put them in a drawer.  If you are really short on closet space, you can choose other items which fold nicely (sweaters and sweatshirts) and place them in drawers or on shelves.

4.  Use the same organization system for your dresser drawers; put all your underwear together, socks together, workout clothes together, jeans together (if you don't hang them up) and so on.  For the smaller items it will help if you purchase some type of closet organizer, divider or small boxes to keep stuff separated.  One for bras, one for socks, one for panty hose, one for underwear, one for scarves, one for gloves - you get the picture.

Let this be a start to your home organization - it is easy and will motivate you to do the rest of the house.  For more closet organizer tips, ideas and closet organization systems we have tried to help you organize your life.

For information on where to buy dividers, what types are available, prices and ideas we added this page.  There are so many closet organizers to choose from but we prefer the wire closet organizer.  Do your research, try some out and find what you prefer.
