The ironing board of today is a far cry from the heavy wooden board that Grandma had to lug out of the basement or closet. Rarely were the legs of those old heavy dinosaurs wobbly and when you consider the heavy weight of the irons back then, ironing was like working out.  Those irons ended up as door stops while the ironing boards served as great fire wood. In some cases, the ironing boards of the past were little more than a plank of wood with an old sheet for an ironing board cover.   The ironing boards which followed were not as sturdy and many a finger was pinched putting them up and down.  Thank goodness convention has finally reinvented ironing boards.

One very interesting decorating idea we have heard of is using one these antique ironing boards as a sofa table. Found this one on craigslist but have not done anything with it yet.   Have not seen it done but sounds so good we will let you know how it turns out.  We think it would work with almost any decor and would be stunning in a very contemporary home.  Perhaps even use one as an entry table...  The one shown here would need some work first.

The ironing boards of today are without a doubt much easier to work with. They fold up neatly and store conveniently without sacrificing a sturdy ironing surface. The size of the ironing board is less important today due to much easier to care for fabrics. The board can be wide enough and long enough to make ironing large items possible without being a dinosaur.  And all most of us need is the type that fits in a drawer - either in your closet or your vanity. Then all you have to do is pull it out while continuing to get ready. Put your ironing boards in the closet or the laundry room?

For homes with a small laundry room, the ironing board is usually stowed in a closet. When the laundry room is large enough it is so handy to keep an ironing board set up in there at all times. However, with the built in styles available today it is easy to conceal it when not in use.  The wall mounted ironing board cabinet available at Walmart is priced at $215.99.  It does not have to be wired in and should be installed near an existing outlet.  When recessed into the wall it is 3.5 inches from the wall to the outer edge of the door.  The storage shelves inside allow for you to put your iron, starch spray or water spray inside.

Are all ironing board covers the same?  Probably not, so consider a few things when purchasing one. A cover should be smooth and permeable to heat and steam. And to ensure they do not stick to your clothes try the Teflon-coated cotton covers. They also make it easier to clean away any build-up of starch or sizing.   I prefer a lot of padding and and an iron board cover that fits really tight.  I move very quickly and ironing is not exception - so a tight, no muss no fuss cover is my favorite.  Shop around and treat yourself to a new ironing board cover and pad.
