Southwest Decorating can be as CUSTOM as you want to make it...and this is how one woman came up with the most custom bathroom vanity cabinet ever!
A custom etagere - our handmade bathroom vanity cabinet...
Our son, a builder, built this vanity frame and covered it with
the fabulous ribs of my now favorite cactus - the Saguaro - and it is
truly a custom southwest vanity. It turned out better than the one I
vaguely remembered from the St. George house. The counter top is a
piece of Montana Bronze Stone
which was cut in an almost half round and polished on the front edge.
There are a lot of local artists in our county and one, a potter, made
the Custom Pottery Sink and Soap Dispenser. We just happened to find
it at one of our local open air markets for a very reasonable price.

We think another great use for Saguaro would be to add it to a
dining room table. There are several sites which sell them with Quisco
cactus on them and we would just try to apply the same technique with
our saguaro ribs. A piece or two could even be used on the back of the
chairs.

Use your own style, imagination and energy to create rooms that exude your personality. Here is her story.
In 2002 at the St. George Parade of Homes, I fell in love with the use of texture in decorating. Nearly every home was done in the very intense southwest decor. I could have moved in. The cold air returns, among other things, were made with a material I could see in my minds' eye but for which I had no name. The front of the bar in the house I have tried to emulate, was also covered with the same gorgeous texture and I finally figured out they were willow rods. A gorgeous headboard in the master bedroom was simply made of the Saguaro Ribs and I will do the same thing someday. I had never seen these gorgeous natural items used in decorating, but once I figured out what they were I ordered some of both online and use them wherever I can. I referred to the pictures I had taken in St. George as well as pictures in magazines to see how to use them.
The Willow Rods were not long enough to use for our cold air returns but they worked great on a very plain wooden etagere. The cabinet has bypass doors with a raised edge frame. We painted the frames copper and glued willow rods horizontally to the inside panel of the doors. Willow Rods on Etagere Bypass Doors. The rest of the cabinet was covered with Saguaro ribs. This Kokopelli intense bathroom is a very custom room and certainly not for everyone. Our venetian plaster artist etched a Recumbent Kokopelli into one of the orange walls. It is a replica of a picture of a Petroglyph from Eastern Utah which is attributed to the Anasazi Culture. Actual picture of Kokopelli from Eastern Utah We found a stain glass window artist to make a custom Kokopelli stained glass insert for the window just large enough we would not have to close the blind in our half bathroom - the white honeycomb blind just would not work with our southwest orange and purple Kokopelli bathroom. And see our Kokopelli Stained Glass here.
