Our Verde Fuoco granite countertop is one of our favorite things in our house. The ultimate countertop: The most cosmopolitan of counters are stone counters. The stone from which granite is made is hewn from the earth in large block forms, then cut and polished with diamonds and water. Granite is the hardest of all building stones and is formed by volcanic activity. Because of its very close grain it is almost impervious to stain and is excellent for any surface treatment in any home. Professional installers should seal it when it is installed. They will tell you to reseal it whenever you notice water begins to not bead up or when water soaks into the granite in 10 or 15 minutes. You will notice this first usually around the sink area. Virtually no two granite slabs are the same and this variation is what makes it so attractive to interior decorators and designers. Granite is found mostly in Brazil, Saudi Arabia, India and South Africa. Verde Fuoco Granite is from Australia. Cleaning Granite : For your granite countertops, even ordinary household cleaners are not recommended. These cleaners tend to lessen the effectiveness of the sealer (but will not harm the stone). Just use hot water or a specially formulated cleaner for granite. Dish soap if used repeatedly or excessively will cause soap build up and reduce the shine. Sometimes granite will stain but the stains will dissipate over time. If you want to remove the stains immediately a stain lifting poultice is recommended. Types of installation: Granite can be installed as slabs or tiles. The tiles are less expensive, but require more care since they have grout lines. The slab will add substantially more value to your home than the tiles, but we do know of some people who prefer the tile look. There are many sizes in the granite tiles and the following sizes are in inches. twelve by twelve, twelve by ten, sixteen by sixteen, twenty four by twenty four, twenty four by twelve and eighteen by eighteen. This large variation in sizes helps with many different types of installation. Types of edges: The edges of your granite counter top can be your choice of many different shapes. Above you will find many popular edge styles. The installation price of the different edges do vary and are dependent on the amount of labor required. Colors of Granite: There are many, many colors available in granite. Not only are there a lot of quarrys which each produce their own colors of granite, even in the same quarry and "same color" there is a tremendous amount of variation. This is actually part of the attraction. Often more than one quarry has the same granite but each quarry gives it a different name - keep this in mind when choosing your stone. It is always best to see it in person. Some granite slabs are just speckled and others have huge veins of color running through them.
