See More About:     Do It Yourself

Important Steps to Learn How To Decorate Your Home By Yourself

1.  I had a vision - I found my vision in a house at the St. George Utah Parade of Homes in 2002.  This was the first time I had ever been exposed to Southwest Decorating - and I fell head over heels.  I did not get to start decorating with any of my southwest ideas until 2006 and by then I had a million ideas!  For information about this year's St. George Parade of Homes Click Here.  You can find your vision with a picture of a room in a magazine, from a house at some tour of homes in your area or you may already have a vision.  Perhaps you once saw an item in someone's home that you have never forgotten.  Start there.  I knew I wanted the countertops, wall finish and floors in the house in St. George and I started there.

2.  Go to the library, bookstore or online and peruse pictures until you find one (or several) which  makes your "socks roll up and down".  Print, save or copy these pictures - depending on what source they are from.  I do recommend you subscribe to at least one magazine that has the most pictures you "absolutely love and where you see the most things you would love to have in your home.  I emphasize most because they all have gorgeous stuff in them. For my southwest decorating I have one magazine subscription - Phoenix Home & Garden.  If your choice is modern, contemporary or you want to do an African or beach room, find a magazine.

3.  You are going to use your magazines over and over.  While working on your bathroom you will just concentrate on bathroom pictures, articles and supplies while going through the magazine.  When you start on your living room you will just concentrate on living room furniture, articles and pictures and so on.

4.  While looking at bathroom pictures, I found a towel rack I just had to have.  I made sure I had a place for it and when I knew I did I started looking online for one. This little item took a lot of searches - I tried every possible combination of words for rolled towel rack / bar / holder you could imagine.  And I finally found it!  Better yet, it was only $14.  It was so worth the hunt.  The first picture is not of my bathroom - it is the original picture I found - their towel rack has the turquoise towels.  My Favorite Towel Rack .  This the picture of the Our Rolled Towel Rack .

5.  I found another picture I loved here and started looking for three bright pictures for a loft wall you see from my living room.  Could not afford real art at this point so looked for posters online.  I settled on these 3 Shaman posters by Tom Perkinson Completed project.  I really enjoy Shaman figures and Shamanism history.  Had them mounted on wood at the poster online store and everyone who sees them loves them.

6.  When you are working on a room, take measurements for the areas which need decorated - wall areas, table areas, entertainment center shelves, fireplace mantles and any floor space which needs some type of metal wall art, pottery or vase to finish up the area.  Keep the list of dimensions and space description in your wallet and then when you see something you like on some shopping spree you will know if it fits a space you have.  We visited a touristy little town and I found this gorgeous horse sculpture by W. Douglas Fullmer in a gallery.  I asked the curator for a tape measure, pulled out my list and voila - I own it!  Fabulous Horse Sculpture
