Add a southwest headboard to your bedroom and you can change it from an ordinary bedroom to a southwest bedroom without springing for a new bedroom set.

Our favorite is this custom saguaro headboard - which is a headboard with saguaro attached to the wall between the posts.   We took pictures when we visited the home it was displayed in.  We think the same thing could be accomplished with a couple juniper half round logs attached to the wall with saguaro in between.  Saguaro is about $85 per bundle and the logs would not be terribly expensive so think about trying it.  The picture is from a St. George 2002 Parade of Homes we visited.

La Fuente Imports has several great headboards and the one they call the Iron Star  is $179 in a queen headboard size.  It is handmade in Mexico using new, kiln-dried Ponderosa pine.  Seller says each piece is 100% wood with all iron and the hardware is hand-forged with a distressed rust colored finish.  This rustic furniture warms up any bedroom in a southwest home or cabin.  They also have a cactus inlaid headboard in twin, double, queen and king sizes which is fabulous for $379 in a queen size.  Their selection is fantastic and so southwest.  Alpine log headboards are also available there and the queen size in the clear finish is $193.  Be sure to compare prices - we saw the Iron Star Headboard at another site for $350.

Metal headboards work well with the southwestern bedroom decor and they are very reasonably priced.  This headboard at Headboard Source is $129.99 in a queen size and for $239.99 you can have the rails and footboard too.  Metal always works well with metal wall art and is great accented with the warm southwest colors of rust, tan, brown and gold.

Direct From Mexico has a gorgeous Mexican Painted Wood Flower Headboard in a queen size for $815.  It is so rustic, colorful and heavy it would complete any bedroom.  The red, orange and deep honey colors enhanced by the patina wash make this hand painted wood headboard a great piece of furniture for the eclectic southwest decor.

We found this wooden bookcase style king headboard with drawers on craigslist for $150.  Rub on some colored wood stain in turquoise, green or peacock blue and you have a very southwest looking headboard.   Check out you local thrift stores as well - find something you like and work it over.  Fortunately distressed furniture is very acceptable for this decor, so you don't have to worry about sanding your wooden furniture items to a smooth surface.  If they are only beat up in one area, just add some distressing all over it until it looks intentional.  We have used the Minwax colored stains right over already stained wood and loved the result.  If the item has too much lacquer for the color to penetrate try using denatured alcohol on it before you stain it.

Pine headboards in any style are great for you to customize into your own headboard.  Because pine furniture is so light and easy to work with you can add all the saguaro you want and it will not be too heavy nor too expensive.  Pine furniture also takes all the Minwax colored stains very well.  Be sure to check out craigslist for a cheap pine headboard.

Metal headboards are most often cheap headboards, but they can be decorated in so many ways to achieve that custom southwest textured look.  The very simple metal headboard shown here with one side wrapped in rope is an example of what can be done with one.  For this king size  project, $20 was spent for rope for the full headboard.  For a double headboard, of course you could spend less.
